Scottish Amateur Match Report
Aikenhead Thistle 6 v 3 East
Kilbride Y.M , Saturday 26th September 2009
East Kilbride Y.M's Scottish Amateur
team travelled to Drumchapel on Saturday for their top of the table
clash with unbeaten Aikenhead Thistle B. With Aikenhead's A team
not playing there were a few 'new faces' in the team that faced Y.M.
The East Kilbride team attacked straight from the kick off and Smith
brought out a fine save from the Aikenhead keeper with an effort
from 12 yards.
The visitors were first to open the
scoring, to quieten the noisy home support, when a clearance from
defence was passed back to the Aikenhead keeper to picked the ball
up. The referee awarded an indirect free kick and Dawson's shot was
deflected into the net. Unfortunately for Y.M they only held
their lead for 2 minutes after a foul on the edge of the box gave
Aikenhead the chance to whip in a dangerous free kick. Some slack
marking allowed the Thistle centre to steal a couple of yards and
bullet a header into the net.
Despite this setback Y.M continued to
persevere with their passing game whilst Aikenhead resorted to the
long ball which was giving them some joy as their two forwards
movement was causing all sorts of trouble for the defence. It
was from one of those long balls that the Thistle player got away
from his marker and from 20 yards chipped Graeme Robertson jnr in
Y.M's goal.
Aikenhead got their third again from a
long ball over the top which set the forward through to score well.
Just before half time Y.M pulled one back when Taylor latched onto
a through ball but was dispossessed and the ball broke to Billy
Robertson whose shot from 8 yards flew high into the net.
After half time Y.M pressed for an
equaliser but were caught with a sucker punch when Aikenhead scored
to make it 4-2 with once again some slack marking allowing the
midfielder to break into the box and score. With 20 minutes to go
the East Kilbride team pushed three up front and brought on all
three subs. One of those subs, Davie Sanderson, made an instant
impression when he latched onto a Ross long throw to head the ball
over the home keeper.
As Y.M pushed for the equaliser with 10
minutes to go they pinned Aikenhead back who were becoming decidedly
nervous. A long ball out of defence was chased down by the home
forward and it appeared that Y.M's keeper had the ball in his hands
on the ground but the forward kicked the ball free and scored a
contentious goal. Worse was to come with 2 minutes to go when Y.M's
keeper was sent off for dissent and from the resultant free kick
Aikenhead made the score 6-3.
