East Kilbride Y.M's Caledonian team were up against their Caledonian
Premier League rivals Bannockburn Amateurs in the Scottish Cup.
This was always going to be a tough fixture for YM but they found
the net early in the game when Martyn McLaughlin's free kick from a
wide left position was only partially cleared by the home defence.
The ball was played out to YM right back Allan Miller whose teasing
cross into the area was bulleted into the net by centre forward
David Thomson after only two minutes. This setback stung the home
side into all out attack but YM held firm till midway through the
half when Donaldson equalised. YM were upset at losing this
equaliser as they had been coping well but a misplaced pass let
Bannockburn in and they capitalised.
Play was swinging from end to end in a good old fashioned "Scottish
Cup Tie" keeping the large crowd entertained. In first half injury
time Bannockburn scored a second goal through the other Donaldson
and again YM contributed to their own downfall by not clearing their
lines. The second half started with YM on the attack and
David Thomson shrugged off the attentions of defender McLeod to
guide the ball past keeper Maitland only to see the ball come back
off the upright and safety.
Both teams gave their all in this pulsating match and with YM
pushing forward looking for the equaliser keeper Peter Keegan showed
his class with plenty saves late on to defy the home side.
Unfortunately time ran out on YM but they had contributed in a
really exciting match and this Saturday they have the opportunity to
show what they can do again when they entertain Giffnock North in
the Caledonian Premier League at the John Wright kick off 2.30pm.
